The Japanese brand Roland likes to keep the development of all its products in constant evolution. Thus we find a series of new updates in its most recent line of Grooveboxes.

Firmware 1.8 is a «free update» for all three devices. Each unit will get some new features that exist on all three machines. Starting with a new feature that allows you to import the new MC and MV production packs that are available for download from Roland Cloud.

These are new collections of clips and tones based on samples designed by Wave Alchemy. Each pack contains 48 custom tones, over 50 drum one-shots, 16 kits and 64 clips organized in groups of four to build 16 custom scenes. In addition, new updates offer undo/redo support and clip import, export and save functions.

This includes clip compatibility between the MC-707, MC-101 and VERSELAB MV-1. This way, you can load clips directly from an SD card, and then save and share them between units or with other MC and VERSELAB users.

It also features three new MFX to further refine your sounds, including an exciter, a phonograph vinyl emulator and a JD Multi. You can now also record MIDI CC signals from external MIDI devices to the Motion Engine.

The MC-101 now features a partial editor that allows you to create exciting tones directly from the MC-101 hardware. This is a major addition that turns the MC-101 into a full-featured groovebox. The devs have also brought a new multi-track mode to the MC-707’s pad note. And both the MC-101 and MC-707 now provide key and musical scale settings for projects.

There are also new functions exclusive to VERSELAB MV-1. Thus, the new update adds panning for vocal samples or a function to apply a fade-out during mixing. In addition, the developers have added new dynamics parameters to the motion designer, new virtual motion controls and a new random tone designer.

Lastly, SMF files can now be imported, a new automatic channel function is available, and you can take advantage of new parameters in the «track setting» in the looper tracks.

Once again Japanese brand Roland offers updates that expand the creative possibilities for your existing grooveboxes. From now on, you can download Roland’s new firmwave 1.8 for free.
